What I wish I had known then….the famous last words! Back to School Time is fast approaching and it as lent itself for thinking of days gone past. I clearly remember my first day of Kindergarten. The mix of excitement for the promises made of what it would be like and the fear of leaving the safety of my world at home. I remember that day when my mom pulled up to the round about and parked in front of this massive brick building called a school. I jumped out of the car with my new tennis shoes tied haphazardly and my brand new backpack filled with erasers, pencils, and crayolas and grabbed my mother’s hand in prickly excitement until we reached the big glass doors. Then I started seeing people that were bigger then 3 feet high. The fun of the day drained a little mixing with fear. A few minutes later, after meeting the principal and being introduced to MY teacher, I was told that “mom” wasn’t coming with me. WHAT!!! I was doing this alone? A tidal wave of fear washed over me and tears poured down. I grabbed my mother’s arm with all my strength and begged her to stay. No deal. She was leaving but what was more is she was leaving WITHOUT me. I wish I had known then that new experiences like this are growing experiences. We all need to face fears or hard stressful trials and oft times we have to do it alone, without support, but when we do we grow in strength that we didn’t even know was possible.

Hi! I’m River and I live in Happy Valley, USA! I am one of 9 children who were adopted, or left by the front steps, depending on whom is telling the story! I am married to Mr. Darling and have 4 wonderful littles! ( Jimbo, Beans, Jacob-Hymer, and Grasshopper) I raise chickens, love mopeds, and drive a van-go complete with moldy french fries and candy wrappers! I am completely infatuated with aprons of any kind, and actually use them. I believe in “cow-girl upping”, family, country and Red Bulls.

I also have written the Great American Novel, which only took me 3 years and was promptly erased by a beloved family member upon completion! I have written and acted in a “One Woman Show” for a local community group. I have had items published in the newspaper and have authored an online “How To” magazine.
